If a list has more messages than it shows, tick one, and the bar above the list offers to select them all. An action on all of them runs on its own: its progress shows above the list and in Activity, with a Stop button, and you can pick other mail meanwhile. You can undo the whole action in one step, even if you stopped it halfway. When it is done, the messages stay selected, so you can do more with them; Select again in Activity selects them again later.
